another cake

no matter how crazy busy i am and how little time i have available to make a cake, i just can't resist a gender reveal...especially when no one (not even the pregnant parents) knows the gender. i got to make the ducky cake again for a gender reveal party on monday. sadly, celsey wasn't available to help which scared me a lot, but it actually turned out great. i just love this little ducky.

it's a boy!
(basically if you have me do a gender reveal, it will be a boy. i'm buying mass supplies of blue food coloring immediately)

thanks jana for letting me make the cake and thanks alison and brian for being surprised. also thanks for letting me take this picture straight from fb:)

present cake round 2

i didn't really love the way the present on top of the birthday cake turned out. since i had 2 extra presents and plenty of leftover frosting, i decided to give it another go. i still haven't done the fondant yet, but i like this so much better. the contrast of the star tip and regular pipe looks much better and doesn't look like a checker board like the other one. i'm starting to have a little more hope that this pan might work out as cute as i originally thought.

Birthday Cake

My friend Allison turned the big 3-0 yesterday and had a party. I bought this pan a while ago and have been dying to use it. A 3 tiered cake with present on top is perfect for a big party right?!? I was terrified the cake wouldn't come out of the pan, but the baking was perfect. Everything was great with the tiers. Unfortunately fav friend Celsey (who I can't even believe I've only known for 8 months) was en route to Lake Powell when the disaster of trying to decorate the present happened. I planned to use fondant but ran out of time and had to resort to the star tip. Attempting that thing alone was a bit ambitious. It worked fine, but there will definitely be more trial runs with the present pan.

could my crappy cell phone pics get any worse? i NEED the iphone 5 to hurry the heck up and come out

cupcakes

i've never really gotten all into the cupcake fad...cake pops..yes but cupcakes..not so much. co-worker brittanie made these cupcakes for another co-worker's birthday.  the broccoli is made from green tootsie rolls dipped in frosting and sprinkles. the noodles are piped on frosting. her goal is to be more crafty. i would say mission accomplished. i nearly died when she showed me the picture.

Circus Shower

Celsey and I hosted a circus themed baby shower for churchy friends Jenny and Lindsey. The theme was so cute and fun, and the food was even better. Too bad we were in the kitchen 95% of the shower and didn't get many pictures...blogger fail. We had elephant cake, peanuts, popcorn, homemade churros, pretzel dogs, lemonade, and cotton candy. We decorated the table with popcorn containers full of peanuts, tickets, red, yellow, and blue circles, and party hats. I really am so sad I didn't get better pictures.

Life is a Circus...

...and we're adding 2 more Acts

Former BYU co-worker and post college roommate Amanda and husband Jeff are having twins. Celsey and I made this circus cake for their gender reveal party. We are definitely still in the learning phase with this whole cakeing thing (like how in the world do you get the fondant to not tear?), but we are having a lot of fun figuring it out. This was the first time we delivered the cake straight to the party. We loved the reactions of everyone. Congrats Amanda and Jeff on 2 baby BOYS!

i thought i got my lens fixed on my phone yesterday, but apparently i am still taking crappy cell phone pics

i'm still dying that this cake actually made the trip from slc to st george with only a few minor problems.

thanks to technology, my parents, jeff's parents, and ashley got to see the reveal too

it's a BOY! it takes a heckuvalot of food coloring to get the cake the perfect blue

details of the cake

Chelsea and Jeff are having baby #3. They already have a girl and a boy. She had to change doctors when their insurance changed so her ultrasound was delayed a few weeks. When she scheduled the ultrasound for the week before Easter, they decided to wait to find out the gender with a cake. Celsey and I have been having a lot of fun making gender reveal cakes, but this cake was definitely the most exciting cake so far. It was so much more exciting that no one knew when we cut the cake. I met them in St. George, and we did the cake with our grandparents, aunt, uncle and cousins. We had our parents, Ashley, and Jeff's parents on skype and facetime. Here's the video of the big reveal.

We're Beary Excited to Meet our Baby...

BOY!

I really hope I can convince someone else to wait until the cake to find out the gender. Next up, a twin reveal. Can't wait!

next up...gender reveal for chelsea and jeff. they had the ultrasound last week and are waiting until we cut the cake to find out the gender. i'm so excited to make this cake and for the mail to come so i know the gender.

another gender reveal...waddle it be???

in the words of co-worker jessica's facebook status a few weeks ago... After 13 years of marriage, 200% infertility and three adopted children, I am 14 weeks pregnant! Shock of a lifetime, my friends--shock of a lifetime.

the excitement of this event definitely warranted a gender reveal cake for the co-workers. celsey and i decided the "waddle it be" theme was way too cute and fun not to use again.

transporting the cake took a little creativity

it's a GIRL! so fun to finally make a pink cake.

beach cake

celsey's cousin, morgan, is going on a mission to perth, australia. she was asked to make a cake for his farewell . celsey came up with the design for this beach themed cake.

we've only made a few cakes, but we learn as we go. we got together friday and baked the cakes, rolled out the fondant and cut the letters, made the rice krispy treat for the wave, and made the flowers. celsey used fondant on the ducky cake, but it was my first time with fondant and both of our first time with gum paste. she found a tutorial on youtube for the plumeria flowers. i was skeptical at first, but as soon as we painted them i wanted to die at how cute they were.

we spent the day saturday assembling it all. we decided we needed another bottom layer so we baked another cake. this thing was massive-6 cake mixes, 2 containers of frosting, 1 lb of fondant, a whole batch of rice krispy treats, some food coloring and paint, 2 mermaids, and the perfect surfer.

after cute*ing our heads off for 2 straight days, we couldn't have been happier with the way the cake turned out. we were literally dying at the cuteness.

thanks to celsey's brother brandon for helping us with the flowers and our structural engineer shawn for helping us figure out how to get the wave to work.

another gender reveal

same girl. 2 cakes. 2 themes.

cake #1 for her family...rub a dub dub is it a boy or girl in the tub?

it's a boy! it takes a heckuvalot of food coloring, but eventually the cake is the just right blue.

cake #2 for the youth at church. waddle it be???
husbands are handy to have around. shawn is our structural cake engineer. i think he secretly loves it.

sadly i was out of town the weekend of the gender reveal. i was only here for the baking part which started disastrous. the  pan is meant to cook the whole duck together, but it was such a mess. we decided to bake both halves separately. it worked so much better. we also used shortening and flour rather than cooking spray. it made all the difference. the cake came out perfectly. i was way sad to miss the decorating part of the cakes. both of them turned out so cute.
